Chelsea sack manager Graham Potter following Aston Villa defeat

Chelsea have sacked manager Graham Potter after less than seven months in charge following Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

The English coach was appointed on a five-year deal in September of last year, but he leaves the Blues having won just seven of his 22 Premier League games in charge. Chelsea's loss against Aston Villa saw them drop to 11th in the top-flight table.

Former Brighton defender Bruno has been appointed as interim head coach, with his first match being a home clash against Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Speaking about Potter's sacking, a statement from Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali read: "On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea.

"We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

"Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.

"We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high."

Potter came up against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in October, with the game finishing 1-1. Meanwhile, he clashed with Manchester City on three occasions this term - in the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup - losing every game.

Chelsea still have both Manchester clubs to play once more in the top-flight this campaign.
