Chelsea's scattergun transfer approach under the spotlight

It's fair to say Chelsea have had a busy summer, with new owner Todd Boehly splashing the cash in order to strengthen Thomas Tuchel's squad after a fairly average campaign last season.

The Blues' biggest arrival without a doubt was the poaching of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City for £50m. Sterling was keen to get out of City’s rotation system and earn more time on the pitch, which he felt he was sorely missing in the build-up to the World Cup.

Brighton’s Marc Cucurella joined Sterling, becoming Chelsea’s most expensive defender to date. The Spaniard should help shore up the backline in the absence of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who have moved on to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.

The defensive reinforcement also includes the eye-catching deal to bring in Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli. The centre-back followed Cucurella in the door for £34m, adding up to £92m spent on Chelsea ’s back line additions.

Chelsea’s most noticeable exit was Romelu Lukaku, who has returned to Inter Milan on loan. After an inconsistent season at Chelsea, the Belgium international was happy to be back at San Siro.

Also loaned out this season is Malang Sarr, who returns to Ligue 1 with Monaco after 21 appearances with Chelsea’s squad, including their Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Tuchel waved goodbye to Timo Werner, who returned to RB Leipzig after an underwhelming stint at Stamford Bridge.
