Chelsea's priority January transfers Graham Potter must be granted amid Cristiano Ronaldo choice

With the World Cup break putting a pause on domestic football for the month, Chelsea can start to put plans into place for their January transfer window plans. The winter could prove to be a huge period for the Blues under their new owners and their new manager.

The summer saw the Boehly-Clearlake regime break the record for a transfer window expenditure in landing a number of players to rebuild the squad. Despite that, there still remains issues to iron out after an extremely inconsistent start to their campaign so far.

With the Blues sitting outside the top four, the need to strengthen while moving towards the new model is the top priority for January. So with that said, here's a look at some of the transfer problems that need to be sorted over the upcoming winter period.

Ronaldo decision

Chelsea were linked with a switch for striker Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, but missed out on landing him due to commitments to Manchester United. Since then, the 37-year-old has become a free agent and will be available to sign, most likely after his World Cup tournament ends.

With huge offers already reportedly being made, Boehly has to make a quick decision over whether he wants to land the striker in the coming weeks. If not, then the striker role remains an issue for the future, where perhaps the signing of a promising youngster can solve that.

Midfield issues

The midfield has been a problem area for Chelsea over the past few seasons as the likes of Jorginho and N'Golo Kante near the end of their contracts and their peak. The need to solve that for the current team, as well as being future proofed in the central ranks is a huge priority, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Edson Alvarez all fitting that profile.

There's also a need to look inwards at deals as Mason Mount's contract dwindles and there is a clear need to give him a long-term offer.

Goalkeeper dilemma

Chelsea have often had a dilemma over their starting goalkeeper, with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga battling it out for the spot. However, the form of both has fluctuated over the years between being key players to costing the side in crucial moments of the season.

With their contracts dwindling too, the club are said to be eyeing a switch for a new No.1 goalkeeper and may be best to solve that issue in January to clarify their position.
