Chelsea’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang chase could decide top-four battle with Arsenal and Spurs, says Alan Smith

Alan Smith believes Arsenal should be targeting the top four as a minimum after suggestions of a title push for the Gunners.

A 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday kept Mikel Arteta’s team top of the Premier League with a perfect record in the early weeks.

But former Arsenal striker Smith has discussed how their top-four hopes could rest on Chelsea’s pursuit of a new attacker with ex-Gunners star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in talks over a move to Stamford Bridge.

“Top four? At least,” he told Sky Sports after the Vitality Stadium victory.

“It’s going to be really tight, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Chelsea. Can they get a centre-forward in?

“If they don’t then maybe they get pulled back to Arsenal and Tottenham’s level, and it might be a fight for two places out of the three of them.

“But the way the Gunners are going, they’ve got every chance - if they can keep it up for the next eight months - of a top-four place.”
