Chelsea resume Mason Mount contract talks with one-year extension on table to stave off Liverpool

Mason Mount has resumed talks with Todd Boehly over his Chelsea future.

Negotiations over extending the 24-year-old's contract, which expires in June 2024, had hit an impasse with the Blues reluctant to put the midfielder on the same £250,000-a-week that Reece James was offered earlier in the season.

There are further complications around the length of the contract, image rights and other clauses that appear unfavourable to Mount compared to those signed on historic contracts under Roman Abramovich, as well as some of Boehly’s own signings.

Chelsea are also interested in signing loanee forward Joao Felix permanently from Atletico Madrid, which could limit Mount's playing time.

Boehly, who has led the talks since his role in the club’s takeover, has asked Mount to sign a new one or two-year deal after his initial requests to give him a seven-year contract were turned down.

Only signing Mount up for one more year would help buy Chelsea time and give them a stronger hand to reject Liverpool's increasingly aggressive advances.

A £70million price tag has also been placed on the England international's head but it is likely to be negotiated down with Manchester United and Newcastle also monitoring the situation, while Manchester City and Arsenal have also been linked.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich could make a move for Mount but that would likely wait until next season, when he may be available on a free transfer.

Mount is Chelsea’s reigning two-time Player of the Season but has had his most difficult season in west London yet after being dropped by Graham Potter, before suffering from injuries before Frank Lampard returned as the caretaker manager.

The pubic bone injury that has disrupted his recent playing time is described as “painful” and has flared up throughout his attempts to return to action.
