Chelsea 'receive' green light to complete January Barcelona transfer amid Todd Boehly contact

Chelsea's pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has received a boost following reports that Todd Boehly has been handed positive indications over a January move from the player's camp.

De Jong decided to remain part of Xavi's squad in the summer transfer window after strong interest from Chelsea and Manchester United. football.london understands that the Blues have tracked the 25-year-old for a few years now but failed to land his services in the summer.

Recent reports have claimed that Graham Potter's side will battle it out with Liverpool and Manchester United to sign the midfielder, should he reverse his decision to remain in Spain. Erik ten Hag, who managed De Jong during their Ajax days, also failed in his attempts to complete a deal.

Now, the Daily Express has reported that Boehly and Chelsea have received indications from De Jong's camp over the possibility of a move in the upcoming January transfer window. De Jong's decision looks to be determined by his playing time at the Nou Camp after having his minutes limited by Xavi.

The midfielder has made only five La Liga starts this season, with Barcelona opting to flex their La Masia academy with Pedri and Gavi in the middle of the park. With the club's future in the Champions League in doubt, De Jong's preference may be to force a move away.

As previously reported, the Blues co-owners share a good relationship with HCM Sports Management, who represent De Jong, meaning a deal could very well be viable. With the futures of N'Golo Kante and Jorginho up in the air, securing a much-needed anchor in Potter's midfield early will make next summer much easier.
