Chelsea player ratings vs Leicester: Mature Trevoh Chalobah shows up Tuchel decision as Reece James stars

Chelsea all-but secured third place in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester on Thursday night.

James Maddison’s fine strike put the Foxes ahead before Marcos Alonso hit back on the verge of half-time.

No winner was forthcoming as a true end-of-season clash fizzled out, at least securing Chelsea their spot in the table unless Tottenham can pull off a three-point and 18-goal swing on the final day.

Here is how James Robson rated the Blues players at Stamford Bridge...

Edouard Mendy - 6

Could do little about Maddison’s goal – and did not have to do much at all after that.

Trevoh Chalobah - 8

Won so many one-on-one challenges. It makes you wonder why he has been overlooked so often in recent weeks. A very mature performance from someone who may be needed a lot more next season.

Thiago Silva - 7

Stood off Maddison for too long as the Leicester man opened the scoring – but was let down by teammates. Barely put a foot wrong after that.

Antonio Rudiger - 7

Perhaps fortunate to only see a yellow for a reckless two-footed tackle in the second half. Carried the ball forward well.

Reece James - 8

His delivery is superb – and his lobbed ball to Alonso for Chelsea’s equaliser was perfection. How Chelsea have missed him during his injury spells this season. The best player on the pitch.

Jorginho - 6

Used the ball well – but with Leicester managing to get so many players behind it, he struggled to find the killer pass.

N’Golo Kante - 6

Caught on his heels as Maddison burst through midfield to score early on. Well-involved and played a part in Chelsea dominating midfield after the break, but not at his best.

Marcos Alonso - 6

Sloppy to let Timothy Castagne get on the wrong side of him for Leicester’s opener – but made up for that with a typically spectacular goal of his own.

Hakim Ziyech - 7

Lively playing behind the front two. Had sighters on goal and picked up dangerous positions to cause problems for Leicester.

Christian Pulisic - 5

Missed an absolute sitter, which summed up a frustrating night for the American. Struggled to make an impact playing off Lukaku.

Romelu Lukaku - 6

Did not get enough sights on goal. His best chance came in the first half when he waited too long to shoot and allowed his effort to be blocked. Cross for Pulisic deserved a better finish.

Substitutes

Cesar Azpilicueta (Pulisic, 72’) - 5

Came on to give James the chance to roam.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Kante, 72’) - 5

Neat and tidy on the ball, but did not find a key pass.

Kai Havertz (Lukaku, 78’) - 4

Had one decent chance to score – but lost his feet.
