Chelsea player ratings vs Dinamo Zagreb: Kepa produces, Koulibaly, Mount and Aubameyang poor

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Brought into the starting XI ahead of Edouard Mendy for the first time since March, Kepa would have been desperate to keep a clean sheet. That didn't happen. The Spaniard was left exposed for Mislav Orsic's opener but produced a smart stop to deny Arijan Ademi and an excellent one to keep out a shot from Stefan Ristovski. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

With Thiago Silva left at home, it was no surprise Thomas Tuchel turned to the experience of Azpilicueta, who started on the right of the back three. Unfortunately, the club captain is a fading force and offered little in possession during the opening period. It came as no surprise that Azpilicueta was brought off at half time. 4

Wesley Fofana

The summer signing was shifted into the middle of the back three and was caught out positionally in the lead-up to Orsic's goal; Fofana didn't drop off prior to Bruno Petkovic's flick-on and wasn't able to catch the rapid Orsic as he sprinted away into the Chelsea half.

As Chelsea chased down an equaliser, Fofana's passing was a little erratic as he tried to force the ball through spaces that were not there. 4

Kalidou Koulibaly

A defender with a wealth of Champions League experience, Koulibaly wasn't strong enough with his challenge on Petkovic on the halfway line prior to Orsic's strike. Was booked in the second period for a poor challenge as Chelsea searched for a way back into the game. 4

Reece James

The academy graduate was a constant outlet for Chelsea in the opening period but wasn't able to have his usual influence in the final third as the Blues struggled to find a way through the Dinamo backline. James was moved to the right of the back three after the break and that limited his attacking threat. On his one foray forward, he struck the post. 6

Mason Mount

Deployed in the double pivot alongside Mateo Kovacic, the academy graduate struggled in the opening period to affect the game with the ball. And out of possession, Mount was pulled across the pitch as he attempted to – unsuccessfully – close off space that emerged.

The England international was moved further forward after the break and was perhaps a tad fortunate not to be punished for an elbow that caught a Dinamo player. It was lightly thrown out of frustration by Mount, who has struggled for form so far this term. Did have a late opportunity, the Blues' best chance, saved. 4

Mateo Kovacic

On his return to Dinamo, the club with which he began his career, Kovacic would have wanted to produce a standout performance. And in a disappointing first half for Chelsea, the Croatian international was arguably the only Blues outfield player to perform at their true level as he moved the ball smartly and reclaimed it in midfield.

After the break, Kovacic thought he had played the pass that unlocked the Dinamo backline as Ben Chilwell squared for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Unfortunately, the flag was raised and the 28-year-old was replaced soon after. 5

Ben Chilwell

After his goal and assist against West Ham United on Saturday, it was no surprise that Chilwell returned to the starting XI. But the England international was unable to maintain his attacking threat during the first half in Zagreb. Chilwell was unlucky not to get an assist after the interval but had started his run just too early and was rightly flagged offside. Was replaced with 20 minutes to play. 4

Kai Havertz

Restored to the starting XI after his late winner against West Ham, Havertz started well but faded after Dinamo went ahead. There were a couple of eye-catching runs from the German and he was presented with Chelsea's best opportunity of the game after Mount found him in the area. Unfortunately, his header was blocked. 5

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

After just two training sessions, Aubameyang was thrown into the Chelsea attack. He started off well and had two good shooting opportunities after breaking into the Dinamo penalty area, but the 33-year-old opted to play a pass rather than release a shot from an angle.

Aubameyang did have the ball in the net in the second period; a finish from close range after the ball had been placed across goal by Chilwell. Yet it was ruled out for offside. The striker was replaced by Armando Broja with 30 minutes remaining. 4

Raheem Sterling

There was plenty of endeavour during the England international's 75 minutes on the pitch, but he wasn't able to match that with the same level of quality. Not that Sterling had much to work with, admittedly. There was one presentable shooting opportunity that opened up in the first half but the former Man City star delayed releasing the ball and the chance was wasted. 4

Substitutes

Hakim Ziyech (for Cesar Azpilicueta, HT)

Introduced at the interval to add a creative spark, Ziyech was poor with his crossing, wasteful with his shooting, and hit the wall with two promising free-kicks late on. 3

Armando Broja (for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 59)

Broja should have started. Instead, he got 30 minutes and wasn't able to have an impact. 4

Jorginho (for Mateo Kovacic, 59)

Brought on to help Chelsea maintain possession. Moved the ball across the pitch but offered little creative threat. 4

Marc Cucurella (for Ben Chilwell, 70)

Defended well as he dropped in on the left of the back three. 4

Christian Pulisic (for Raheem Sterling, 75)

Didn't have time to make an impact. N/A
