Chelsea player ratings as Kalidou Koulibaly solid but Joao Felix and Kai Havertz frustrate

Kepa Arrizabalaga - Didn't have a shot to save in the opening half as Borussia Dortmund couldn't find the target with any of their 11 shots. Did what was required for the most part and could do little as Karim Adeyemi remained composed to pass the Spaniard and place the ball into the net. 6.

Reece James - The 22-year-old's defensive responsibilities made it difficult for him to attack quickly in transition but much like against West Ham, his influence grew as the game went on. Felt like James was approaching his best form in certain moments and ended up as one of Chelsea's chief attacking threats. 7.

Thiago Silva - Picked up a yellow card for directing the ball into the goal via his hand but otherwise produced the cool performance Chelsea have become accustomed too. 7.

Kalidou Koulibaly - A solid first half from the Senegal international as Chelsea's defensive pairing was put under pressure by the quick attacking of their German hosts. Came close to finding an equaliser in an impressive return. 8.

Ben Chilwell - Provided more assistance in forward positions from the off and caused Dortmund problems but had some difficult moments against the likes of Julian Brandt. A very decent return to the starting XI before being replaced in the second half. 6.

Enzo Fernandez - The midfielder continued to show his ability to help Chelsea build play but was beaten by Karim Adeyemi's change of pace as the Dortmund forward kept his composure to put his side ahead. 6.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - Struggled to stay involved in the early stages but grew into the game alongside Fernandez and helped dictate play in the second period. 6.

Hakim Ziyech - Provided a workmanlike performance where he was flexible all down the right flank as winger, right midfielder and wingback. Combined well with Joao Felix before the Portuguese international hit the crossbar and continued to prove his value under Potter. Drew fouls across the second period and was unfortunate to not see Koulibaly score from his pass. 7.

Joao Felix - He'll be frustrated not to have finished two good chances in the opening half but looked a level above his opponents when on the ball and didn't misplace a pass in the first 45 minutes. Struggled to find the same pockets as the game wore on and Dortmund sat deeper. 6.

Mykhailo Mudryk - It was quickly apparent that the Ukraine international would at some point find a great advantage over Marius Wolf, but he did prove unnecessarily wasteful in possession deep in his own half. Showed more incisiveness in the second period but overall too clumsy in possession on Wednesday evening. 5.

Kai Havertz - It's still clear that Havertz does not take up the traditional positions of an out-and-out forward but he showed promising combinations with Felix and caught the opposition unawares on occasion. 6.

Substitutes:

Marc Cucurella - Aggressive in looking to win the ball upon his introduction and help Chelsea keep pressure on the opposition. 6.

Mason Mount - Played some incisive passes but crucially picked up a yellow card that will see him suspended for the return leg. 6.
