Chelsea player ratings as Cucurella improves, Broja and Chukwuemeka show promise, Blues struggle

Kepa Arrizabalaga - It wasn't long before the Spanish goalkeeper was pulling off impressive saves, as he tipped Ivan Toney's header over the bar in the opening 10 minutes and showed impressive reactions throughout the game. He showed complete nonchalance to bring down the ball on his chest after running to guard Bryan Mbuemo's effort from the halfway line. 7.

Cesar Azpilicueta - Solid in Chelsea's back three and showed some good crossing when he reached the higher portions of the pitch. A reassuring performance given the workload he may have in the coming weeks. 7.

Trevoh Chalobah - Should have been tighter to Ivan Toney in his first duel with the Brentford frontman, but improved as the game went on and put in a battling performance. 7.

Kalidou Koulibaly - Made hard work of taking the ball from Frank Onyeka before recovering to clear the ball from the winger's cross in the 28th minute. He produced some vital clearances and interceptions when required. 6.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - Struggled to make a real impact in the opening half but was defensively solid at wing-back throughout the game. He looked more menacing going forward in the second period. 6.

Jorginho - A steady evening from the Italian, who sat at the base of midfield and looked to build Chelsea pressure from there. 6.

Conor Gallagher - Struggled to retain possession of the ball in the early stages but was more worryingly forced off the field with an injury in the opening half. 4.

Mason Mount - Took a little while to warm to the game, but he was involved in Chelsea's better patterns of play and showed a clever eye for a pass. Not his most influential night overall before he was subbed just after the hour mark. 6.

Marc Cucurella - Chelsea's summer signing had a lot to prove after a difficult afternoon at Villa Park and responded with some firm tackles at the Gtech community stadium. He had a solid outing before he was replaced. 6.

Kai Havertz - The German forward started the game fouling and being fouled and while that settled down, he struggled to find his groove. Looked much better when leading the line during the final half hour. 5.

Armando Broja - He was disconnected as Chelsea struggled to get into the game but looked very good on the ball. The Albania international showed a rapid turn of pace when afforded the opportunity to attack in behind. Unfortunate, to be substituted. 6.

Substitutes

Mateo Kovacic - Produced some magical ability to retain possession shortly after replacing Gallagher and looked to get the Blues moving. Some clever moments but they couldn't break through Brentford's lines of defence. 6

Christian Pulisic - Unfortunate not to earn his side a penalty shortly after entering the field but struggled to find much space as Brentford sat deeper and deeper. Saw his dipping shot saved late on. 6.

Carney Chukwuemeka - The youngster was paired with Pulisic in playing behind Havertz and had a talent for getting on the ball in the Brentford box. The ex-Aston Villa man showed quick acceleration and was unfortunate not to create more. 7.

Raheem Sterling - Filtered into a wing-back position on Chelsea's left side but looked to get further and further forward as the game progressed. Had a shot blocked in the final 10 minute. 6.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameuyang - The former Arsenal striker arrived on the pitch with 10 minutes to go but could only manage one tame shot. 5.
