Chelsea player ratings as Ben Chilwell sent off, Felix and Sterling poor in Real Madrid defeat

Kepa Arrizabalaga – He really doesn't cover himself in glory for the Karim Benzema goal. The Spaniard needs to get more of a hand to it. I can't imagine the result would be the same if it was Thibaut Courtois down the other end. Questions over his role in the second goal as well. 4.

Wesley Fofana – Struggled in the first-half. Got booked really early on and when you're up against Vinicius Jr, who is borderline unstoppable, that's not good at all. However, think he did really well to keep his cool and defend solidly for the remainder of the match. 6.

Thiago Silva – Came back into the side after weeks on the sideline and you won't be shocked that he looked superb as always. He was the leader Chelsea needed back there and performed some outstanding defensive actions to keep his side in the tie. 7.

Kalidou Koulibaly – Had a really solid game. He was up against Rodrygo, who at times showcased his threat but Koulibaly did well to keep him pretty quiet. Came off on 55 minutes after pulling up with a muscle injury. 6.

Reece James – The way Madrid played made it very difficult for the wing-backs to get up the pitch. James only found himself in strong attacking positions on a few occasions. He wasn't able to really make his mark on the match at the Bernabeu. 5.

N'Golo Kante – Started the game really well. As the first-half went on, there were a couple of sloppy moments but he stood up and made himself counted – something Chelsea had very little of on the evening. 6.

Enzo Fernandez – Enzo and Kante looked a world apart from the rest of the Chelsea players – bar Silva – in the first-half. You can tell Enzo is made for games at the elite level like this. 6.

Mateo Kovacic – Struggled to make the desired impact. Was outshone by his two midfield partners at his former club. Not his best performance but not disastrous by any means. 5.

Ben Chilwell – Really struggled to get involved much in the first-half. Makes a poor decision in bringing down Rodrygo early in the second period. The referee had no choice but to send him off. 3.

Raheem Sterling – Really poor. The system didn't look right for him. He wasn't moving too much when the visitors had the ball. Very few touches and despite having Felix next to him, he seemed pretty isolated. 4.

Joao Felix – Similarly for Felix, he was also really poor. He had one decent moment where he turned on the ball but his shot was blocked. Again, the system Frank Lampard went with did not suit the Portugal international. 4.

Substitutes

Marc Cucurella – On in the 55th minute for the injured Koulibaly. Probably should have done better for Chilwell's red card. 4.

Kai Havertz – Failed to make the desired impact. Didn't get a chance too, really. 5.

Trevoh Chalobah – Nothing special, came on in a really sticky situation, though. 5.

Mason Mount – Actually looked decent when he came on. Got stuck in, which can't be said about a lot of the players. 6.

Conor Gallagher – Worked a lot, as always, but couldn't make any sort of impact. 5.
