Chelsea 'open talks' with former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards

Chelsea have reportedly opened talks with former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards.

But according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea must overcome two big obstacles if they are to convince the transfer guru to accept a similar role at Stamford Bridge.

Todd Boehly has been tracking Edwards ever since he left Liverpool at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract. Boehly, one of Chelsea's new co-owners, has been helping manager Thomas Tuchel with transfers after the departure of Marina Granovskaia.

Edwards proved he was one of the best in the business during his time at Anfield after negotiating signings such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.

Edwards also negotiated the big-money sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona - paving the way for the Reds to sign Van Dijk and Alisson - and also sold youngsters Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster for over £20m each.

Chelsea have been busy in the transfer window after confirming the signing of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £47.5m and £34m respectively. The London club are also on the brink of hijacking City's move for left-back Marc Cucurella from Brighton and signing Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa for £15m.

However, it appears they still want Edwards to lead their transfer strategy going forward. But the Mail report that there are two hurdles to get past.

Firstly, upon leaving Liverpool, Edwards made it clear he wanted to take a break from football - with the report suggesting up to a year - before taking on his next challenge. And secondly, there is said to be a concern over the 'degree of control' Boehly and the new Chelsea owners will grant the sporting director.
