Giving young players a big-money contract has not always been the ideal route for Chelsea to take in the past. However, if there’s a time to do it, it is now. It's only right that Reece James is given a new Chelsea deal that truly reflects the incredible effort and work rate he puts in.
According to data from Sportrac, James currently earns around £56,000 a week. This makes him a low earner in comparison to the rest of the squad. It comes as no surprise that Chelsea are ready to hold talks with the 24-year-old to discuss new terms in his contract. It also doesn't come as a surprise that his team have already been preparing for this.
It seems as though this has been a long time coming. The England international is deserving of an upgrade and Todd Boehly has one less potential issue off his checklist.
With the Boehly era in full effect, sorting Reece James’ contract would be a great way to open his account. It will fend off those eager rivals who have been monitoring his situation closely. According to The Athletic, other Premier League clubs have been lurking around and more recent reports suggest that this includes Manchester City.
James is on course to becoming one of the best full-backs in the world right now. Previous reports also suggest that Real Madrid are looking to sign the full-back in 2023. Considering the loss of Antonio Rudiger to the Los Blancos, fans would rather not see one of their own rocking the prestige white/black in Spain.
Another contract that must be assessed as soon as possible for Todd Boehly is Mason Mount. The 23-year-old is a profound fan favourite and most certainly should remain on the list of priorities. We are unlikely to see Mount leave Chelsea as he is tipped amongst the fanbase to become Chelsea's future, "Captain, Leader, Legend" figure -but with the way things have transpired within the Chelsea camp last season, you can just never be too sure.
It is imperative that both Mount and James are given equal opportunities to take their place among Chelsea's top earners. With their commitment to the club and their importance, it's safe to say that either player could become Chelsea's new captain. I see these players as the future for Chelsea football club, hence why their contracts need to be the first ones sorted as new players enter the club.
