Chelsea on red alert as Arsenal join transfer race for Reece James January back-up option

The January transfer window is just on the horizon and Chelsea will be one of the sides that could be the most active once it opens in a few weeks time. There have been questions over the recruitment strategy at the club but the World Cup break could allow time to recalibrate and focus on viable recruitment options once again.

Co-owner Todd Boehly had a hands on approach over the summer window, given how soon after the takeover it opened and just how much work the Blues needed to rebuild the squad. Months later and the infrastructure is working itself out as the likes of Paul Winstanley, Joe Shields and Laurence Stewart are set to join.

On the pitch, there are issues for the recruitment team to sort and January will offer them the first chance to do just that to help Graham Potter sort their inconsistency.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure we will," Potter said when asked if he would discus transfers with the board. "We have a regular dialogue anyway. Sometimes you need to reflect, think and analyse. Absolutely, we need to think about what's happened and what we can do to improve."

One particular problem is the lack of depth at wing-back, particularly on the right as Reece James' importance is clearly displayed when he is out of the team injured. As of now, Cesar Azpilicueta is the option in his absence, however he lacks the ability to travel up and down the flank as his teammate does.

That's why January could be the ideal moment to make a move for another back-up option and one player being linked is Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries. However, they could face some challenges in landing the Netherlands international as CalciomercatoWeb reports that London rivals Arsenal are also in the race to land him.

The Gunners have made an ideal start to their season and sit top of the Premier League, meaning they could look to make a number of moves to improve their chances of winning the title. For the Blues, it could add further issues in wanting to land the wing-back as another option on the flank.
