Chelsea news: Thomas Tuchel's side out of Champions League as Blues backed to sign Dortmund duo

Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Wednesday, April 13.

Chelsea crash out of Champions League after heroic effort in Madrid

Chelsea were 3-2 victors (AET) on the night, but it wasn't enough to eliminate Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner saw the Blues take a 3-0 lead, but a late finish from Vinicius Junior meant the clash went to extra-time. Karim Benzema then scored his fourth goal of the tie to break Chelsea's hearts.

Chelsea backed to sign Dortmund duo

Chelsea have been backed to sign Borussia Dortmund pair Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham in the summer by former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson. It comes as the Blues prepare for a potentially busy summer transfer window ahead.

Speaking to Bettingodds.com, the ex-England international said: “If Chelsea get the money that they need, I’d like them to get Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland. They’re both going to be super, super expensive.

“It just depends on what they can get for Lukaku. If he goes, you’re not going to get anywhere near the £97.5m they paid for him from Inter Milan.

“It would be an extremely tough deal to do. If you’re talking about just strikers however, then I’d like Haaland to come in to replace any outgoing forwards.”

Gary Neville verdict on Chelsea’s season

Former Manchester United defender and pundit Gary Neville believes Chelsea are the “best of the rest” after failing to match Liverpool and Man City's standards in the Premier League title race this season. It comes as the Blues look set to fall short of the top two, with a gap to the teams below almost securing a third-placed finish this season.

Discussing the side’s performance this season on his podcast, Neville said: “They [Chelsea] are the third-best team in the country. They are consistent, they have a great manager. Their spirit has not been damaged by what's happened in these last few weeks, they are a very strong group."
