Chelsea news: Questions remain over sale as new priority emerges for two bidders

Questions remain over where the money from Chelsea's sale could end up.

The club were put up for sale by Roman Abramovich following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the bids have now been whittled down to just three interested parties. Abramovich has also had sanctions imposed on him by the UK Government which mean Chelsea are unable to process any financial transactions and have to operate under a special licence.

That leaves two probable options of what will happen to the proceeds of the money made from the sale of the club. It comes as two of the interested parties are said to be eying the purchase of another sporting franchise.

And Thomas Tuchel's signing of Romelu Lukaku last summer could serve as a warning for Manchester City as they line up the signing of Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Chelsea headlines.

Tuchel's warning for Man City

Manchester City have been served a warning by Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku's struggles since joining the club.

Pep Guardiola's side are widely believed to be closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland to add a designated forward to their squad. A new striker was top of Thomas Tuchel's wishlist last summer and the club ended up bringing Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge – although things have not turned out as hoped.

And the events could be a warning to City as they eye a new forward this summer.

New priority emerges for two bidders

Two of the bidders hoping to become the new owners of Chelsea are also eying a deal for NFL side the Denver Broncos.

Todd Boehly and Josh Harris are among five groups to have progressed to the next stage of talks and are now expected to meet the team's management in early May. There is expected to be progress in the takeover of the Stamford Bridge outfit by that point.

And that means one of the parties could have double reason to celebrate by the end of the season.

Questions remain about takeover

Questions remain over what will happen with the money made from the sale of Chelsea.

There are two likely scenarios around what happens to any profit generated: a surplus will either go to charities dedicated to victims of the war in Ukraine or be placed in an escrow account, where it will be frozen and held for an undetermined length of time - perhaps until Abramovich is no longer on the UK government sanctions list.

But clarity is unlikely to arrive until after the transaction is completed.
