Chelsea news: Neymar activates PSG clause as Cristiano Ronaldo makes transfer decision

After the end of last season was shrouded in concern, Chelsea fans will be starting to get excited about the new campaign again.

Manager Thomas Tuchel may have lost some key players already this summer - most notably star defender Antonio Rudiger - but the cub appear intent on filling gaps in the squad with high-class replacements.

Raheem Sterling and Raphinha both continue to be linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in deals that would refresh last season's inconsistent attack. Meanwhile, a host of defenders have been mentioned as rumoured targets to fill the Rudiger-shaped void in the side.

Neymar activates contract clause

Despite speculation linking him with a move away from Paris Saint-Germain, Brazil forward Neymar is said to have activated a clause in his contract that will keep him in the French capital until 2027.

The Ligue 1 giants paid a world-record transfer fee to sign the Brazilian in 2017 from Barcelona. While he's produced flashes of quality at PSG, Neymar - in tandem with Kylian Mbappe and last season Lionel Messi - has been unable to deliver a coveted Champions League prize for the club.

This summer, speculation has gathered pace that PSG are ready to sell Neymar, with Chelsea among the clubs linked with him. However, the player himself is said to have triggered an extension to the deal he signed last summer that spanned until 2026.

PSG are to be willing to move into a new era, with manager Mauricio Pochettino leaving the club. Neymar is also taking up a substantial salary, with the Selecao superstar earning in excess of £600,000 every week in Paris.

Ronaldo wants out at United

According to a variety of reports, United's star forward Cristiano Ronaldo has told the club he is keen to move on this summer, with Chelsea among those linked with the striker.

Ronaldo was expected to stick around at Old Trafford to help new manager Erik ten Hag usher in a new era, with the team looking to recover from their worst ever Premier League points total. However, the 37-year-old is said to want to play Champions League football in the twilight years of his career.

The Blues are one of a number of teams that have been linked with the veteran, with United reported to have been furious over a meeting between new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and Ronaldo's representative Jorge Mendes.

Although it would be a shock if Ronaldo did move to Stamford Bridge, the club can offer the elite-level European football he clearly craves.

Boelhy gets transfer inspiration

With a number of new players set to come in this summer and revamp Tuchel's Chelsea squad, there are clear comparisons to be made to another window 19 years ago, when Roman Abramovich bankrolled a huge spending spree.

Abramovich sold the club to Todd Boehly this summer and the new owner is believed to be taking a hands-on approach when it comes to transfers.

Boehly's predecessor made a massive 11 signings in his first window in charge, completely transforming the Chelsea squad and lifting expectations at Stamford Bridge. A total of £112 million was spent on 11 players, with the likes Damien Duff, Juan Sebastian Veron, Hernan Crespo and Claude Makelele all coming in.

The Blues will surely part with more cash than that in this window, but the shift in personnel may well be resemblant of that remarkable pre-season in 2003.
