Chelsea news: Kepa lifts lid on "tough moments" as Liverpool eye Christopher Nkunku hijack

Chelsea are riding high after picking up their fifth successive win under Graham Potter at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The praise for that win can mostly be placed on the performance of goalkeeper Kepa, who has become the first-choice since Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel. The Spaniard pulled off a string of impressive saves, but admitted to having endured "tough moments" in his Blues career.

Kepa's admission comes as Villa boss Steven Gerrard insisted Chelsea were "flattered" by the win and Liverpool plot a hijack of the Blues' bid for Christopher Nkunku. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Chelsea news.

Kepa opens up on "tough moments"

Chelsea keeper Kepa has opened up on the challenging times he has faced during his time at the Blues. The Spaniard became the world's most expensive goalkeeper when he arrived from Athletic Bilbao.

But he has struggled for form since then, losing his place in the starting line-up to Mendy. He has now retaken his number one shirt under Potter and admitted his happiness at putting his "tough moments" behind him.

“Self-confidence and belief in your work, in what you’re doing, and belief in the process is very important. Of course I had really tough moments. I had really good moments, but in the end it’s like life,” he said.

Gerrard admits frustration

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has admitted his frustration that his side were unable to claim any points from their clash with Chelsea. The Blues secured a 2-0 win at Villa Park on Sunday, ramping up the pressure on Gerrard.

But following the defeat, the former Liverpool captain insisted that the scoreline had "flattered" the visitors. And he was left stunned that the hosts had not been able to get on the scoresheet.

"If the players can replicate the first hour of this performance, they won't have an issue. The scoreline flatters Chelsea in terms of how the game planned out. I'm still in a little bit of disbelief we haven't got at least a couple of goals," he said.

Liverpool plot Nkunku hijack

Chelsea are reportedly facing a late attempt from Liverpool to hijack their move for Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman has starred for RB Leipzig, scoring 35 goals last term to help them lift the DFB-Pokal.

That led to the Blues making him one of their top targets for next summer's transfer window. It was thought they were close to reaching an agreement with Leipzig that would see him move to Stamford Bridge.

But it has now been revealed that Liverpool are now scouting the 24-year-old, including during Leipzig's win over Celtic last week. The Reds are ready to pounce should his move to the Blues fall through.
