Chelsea news: Jose Mourinho comments on ownership as Thomas Tuchel talks summer budget

Chelsea's indifferent form has left them in a predicament going into a crucial spell of matches.

A few weeks ago the Blues appeared to have third place sewn up and an FA Cup final to look forward to. However, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have closed the gap to Chelsea in the race for the top four, meaning manager Thomas Tuchel will not be able to look beyond Wednesday's clash with Leeds United in the Premier League.

While the FA Cup showdown with Liverpool will clearly be a massive occasion for the club on Saturday, given the off-field problems that have engulfed Chelsea this season, the prospect of no Champions League football at the club next term feels unthinkable.

Mirror Sport has your latest Blues headlines ahead of a huge week, with Tuchel seeking to secure Champions League status and another piece of silverware.

Mourinho comments on Chelsea slump

Former Blues boss Jose Mourinho believes the club has lost the "excellence and stability" they previously had.

The 2-2 draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday means Chelsea have won just one of their last five Premier League games and a season that promised so much in its nascent stages appears to be in danger of fizzling out. Mourinho was asked what has gone wrong in recent weeks and made reference to the club's ongoing ownership predicament.

"It's a difficult moment and you can even feel it at the football level because they have lost that level of excellence and stability," he said. "But this is at the moment, you know. If you ask me do I have someone I would like to take over my Chelsea? Then yes I have, but I close my mouth. I just know the club has reached such a level that it doesn't matter who it's with, Chelsea will always be Chelsea. Chelsea will always be."

Tuchel unsure on spending power

The Chelsea boss has admitted he is not yet sure how much money he will have to spend in the summer window.

A consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly is poised to take over the club this month, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty following the sanctions placed on former owner Roman Abramovich. With Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and potentially more set to leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will need to revamp their squad. However, Tuchel confirmed conversations over those decisions have not yet been held.

"We feel like spectators and this is a passive role we don't like," said Tuchel at his press conference on Tuesday. "It feels a bit strange. Summer transfer budget? I don’t know how much it will be, as of today."

Costa linked with Birmingham

Former Chelsea favourite Diego Costa could make a surprise move to Birmingham City, according to reports.

The ex-Barcelona and Argentina striker Maxi Lopez is said to be ready to buy a controlling stake in the Midlands club, with their current Chinese owners prepared to sell. Lopez is part of a group bidding for control that includes Birmingham fan and businessman Paul Richardson.

And the prospective majority shareholders seem to have big plans, with free agent Costa said to be on their list of transfer targets. The Spain international was a big hit at Stamford Bridge, helping the Blues win two Premier League titles. In January, he terminated his contract with Atletico Mineiro after making just 19 appearances for the club.
