Chelsea are not in Premier League action this weekend, with their scheduled match against Liverpool on Sunday postponed due to a lack of available police ahead of the Queen’s funeral.
The Blues started the Graham Potter era with a 1-1 draw against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday, but the new manager will have to wait for another game, with the international break approaching. The next Chelsea match will instead be against Crystal Palace on October 1.
The lack of match action doesn’t mean a lack of news for Chelsea, with Potter busy on the training pitch and owner Todd Boehly busy behind the scenes. Here Mirror Football brings you some transfer news, an update from the search for a sporting director and a blast from the past.
Barca consider Jorginho
Barcelona could target Chelsea midfielder Jorginho next summer as they seek a replacement for Sergio Busquets, Mirror Football understands.
Jorginho’s Chelsea contract is set to expire in June 2023, leaving him open to other clubs. If the situation remains unaddressed, Barca would be able to discuss terms over a free transfer from January onwards.
Busquets turns 35 next summer and will also be out of contract then. Jorginho joined Chelsea from Napoli for £57million in 2018, but could leave for free. He’s made 196 appearances for the club, contributing 27 goals and nine assists.
PSG chief rules out Chelsea move
Paris Saint-Germain advisor Luis Campos has ruled out the possibility of becoming Chelsea’s sporting director.
Todd Boehly is looking to hire someone to sit above Graham Potter and lead the Blues in off-the-pitch matters following Marina Granovskaia’s departure over the summer.
Campos was on the shortlist, along with Red Bull Salzburg director Christoph Freund and former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards. But having only joined PSG in the summer, following the appointment of Christophe Galtier, Campos isn’t tempted to jump ship yet.
"I have a three-year deal here at PSG, as I wanted, and I've joined this club because I'm convinced we can do something extraordinary," Campos told RMC. "I've the right energy to fight for PSG and do something great here."
Dein regrets Cole sale
Former Arsenal co-owner David Dein has apologised to Ashley Cole for the circumstances surrounding his move to Chelsea in 2006.
Cole came through the Gunners academy and established himself in the Arsenal and England team before moving across London in controversial circumstances. Dein has now explained how that happened – and apologised to the left-back.
"I regret that we didn't do enough at the time to keep him at the club. It was also at a time where we were talking about building the stadium and finances, so tensions were raging about how we were going to finance the stadium and we were watching every penny.
"We didn't go enough to keep him, and I regret that with hindsight. Ashley, if you're listening, I'm sorry."
