Chelsea news: Graham Potter makes brutal admission as Reece James breaks England silence

Chelsea return their attention to Premier League duties for the final time before the World Cup this weekend when they take on Newcastle on Saturday.

The Blues face a huge clash with the Magpies in the race for the top four, although they would like to be challenging for more than that. However, Graham Potter has controversially stated that his side haven’t been able to compete for major trophies in recent years. Elsewhere, Reece James has broken his silence after learning of his World Cup heartbreak.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Stamford Bridge.

Potter aims dig at Tuchel

Potter believes that Chelsea have not been able to compete for trophies “for three of four years” - despite winning three under previous manager Tuchel.

The German guided the Blues to Champions League glory in 2020/21, before scooping up the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies soon after. However, Potter has given his own views on the club’s capability to win silverware.

He said: "One of the reasons to come here, one of many, was that it's a fantastic football club, potentially one of the best in the world, and that can compete for any major trophy. But I think we all know that we're not at that point now, and we haven't been for two or three or four years.”

Reece James breaks World Cup silence

Chelsea right back James has finally broken his silence after learning that he will not be part of England’s World Cup squad later this month.

The defender has been ruled out of action since October but has undergone an intense rehabilitation programme to ensure he is fit enough to feature for the Three Lions in Qatar. However, following talks with Southgate on Tuesday, he will not be risked.

"Devastated. The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turn around to make the World Cup would be tight, but I always felt it was possible”, he said in a social media post. “I appreciate there was a risk on both sides but it was one I was willing to take. Good luck to the boys. I'll be back soon. Stay safe and sending love."

Man Utd take action on Chelsea target

Manchester United are stepping up their transfer plans and have already got to work on making a move for Chelsea target Victor Osimhen.

The Napoli sensation has attracted plenty of interest from top clubs across Europe in the last 12 months, especially, and the Blues could see him as their long-term fix to their attacking options, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang only a short-term solution.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, United’s scouting team are hard at work putting together long and shortlists of targets that could potentially be suitable, with one of those options reportedly being Osimhen.
