Chelsea news: Gary Neville makes Premier League prediction as Reece James decision made

Chelsea turn their attentions to the Champions League this week after a topsy-turvy London derby against West Ham United at the weekend.

The Blues came from behind to record a 2-1 win over David Moyes' side thanks to goals from Ben Chilwell and a late strike from Kai Havertz. It was a huge relief for Thomas Tuchel's men, who bounced back from defeat against Southampton in midweek by securing a vital three points.

They will be looking to build on that result when they travel to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Tuchel's side were disappointing in Europe last season as they crashed out in the quarter-final and will be hoping to do at least one better this season.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Stamford Bridge.

Neville makes Chelsea prediction

Gary Neville believes Chelsea will have to do 'battle' with two of their rivals to achieve the final top four spot in this season's Premier League.

The Blues have started the season with an underwhelming points return after six fixtures of 10 points from an available 18. It is the same amount of points that Antonio Conte got at the start of the 2016/17 season when Chelsea went onto win the Premier League title. But Neville thinks it will be difficult for the Blues to make it into the top four, however.

Neville told Sky Sports: "I think Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham will be the top three. I think it's a big battle between Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United. I think Liverpool, you think they are going to come good just because of what they have done in the last few years.

"I think United will struggle to get in the top four personally."

Barkley makes Nice move

Nice have continued their raid on the Premier League by signing ex-Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley after the midfielder was released last month.

The 28-year-old left the Blues by mutual consent following a difficult four-and-a-half-year spell at Stamford Bridge, where he made just 58 Premier League appearances in total. He joined the club in a £20million deal from Everton but failed to live up to expectations despite playing under four different managers.

Barkley was brought by Antonio Conte in January 2018, before Maurizio Sarri was appointed later that year. But Barkley arguably had his best season in a Chelsea shirt under Sarri's stewardship, playing 48 times as they lifted the Europa League.

However, he wasn't fancied in Frank Lampard's second season in charge and spent a short time out on loan at Aston Villa, before Thomas Tuchel decided he wasn't part of his plans this season.

Now, he has decided to move across the continent to France with Nice as he tries to reignite his career. Barkley is the fourth English-based player to make the switch to Nice this summer.

James close to new deal

Chelsea are set to reward Reece James with a long-term deal. Firstly reported by the Times, the 22-year-old right-back is close to signing a new lucrative contract with the Blues, as talks over a bumper pay rise are now at an advanced stage. Stamford Bridge chiefs reportedly expect James to put pen to paper in the coming days.

The news would all but end speculation regarding a potential move away from west London, with Real Madrid and Manchester City linked last year. The academy graduate has already racked up 127 first-team appearances since his debut campaign in 2019-20 following a star-making loan spell with Wigan Athletic.
