Romelu Lukaku's future at Chelsea may not be safe as one of Chelsea's highest earners. The Belgian reportedly earns around £300k, and with Roman Abramovich now out of the picture, the Blues could need to slice the wage bill to avoid Barcelona drama.
Chelsea's transfer window is still in jeopardy as they search for new ownership. By the time the new owners arrive at the Bridge, enough damage may have been done to see player wages cut. We all know that Lukaku has once stated that he would love to make a return to Inter Milan. Could this be the way to do it for him?
It's hard enough having to think about an uncertain future for the club. It's even more difficult knowing just how the cut back in expenditure may impact future ownership.
We've seen Spanish giants Barcelona have drastic cuts in wages. Of course, their debt was the cause of their drastic measures, whilst Chelsea's ownership is the cause of ours. Whilst Barcelona had to face their debt head-on, Chelsea can still see a way out. But it is up to the UK Government to grant them that grace.
The situation at Chelsea may not get to the point of no return. As much as rival fans are wishing for a cynical financial downfall, it's just unlikely to happen. However, if it was to come to dire stages, players may see their wages sliced, and fans' could get the Romelu Lukaku wish that they've desired since December.
The reception towards Romelu Lukaku has not been positive since his Sky Italia interview. Fans are still left hurt by his words of so-called 'betrayal', and several will still be comfortable if he was to leave the club this summer. The Belgian intentional is currently the highest earner at the club. If the blues are having to prevail through tough times, wage cuts will be in order, and they will need to start with Lukaku.
All together, Chelsea reportedly payout £28m a month in wages. The most recent accounts show reserves of just £16m. If we do that maths, the Blues will be out of money in 17 days. Yikes!
Ticket and merchandise funds are now banned, and until the Government decides to reconsider, they will have to reconsider the hefty wage structure.
For some players, it may not be about the money. They could look at potential wage cuts and decide brighter days ahead. On the contrary, the Chelsea fans' hostile treatment may give Lukaku an unprecedented way out if he's not happy with a new wage structure. He could see the door once new ownership had their takeover granted.
Now, I must say that this is all speculation. As I've stated, Chelsea could still find a way out of their current financial jam. New ownership is imminent, and it may not come to a point where the Blues need rescuing.
As we continue to sink into a world of the unknown, there will be many theories thrown your way. Several rivals will be in our ears, and it's down to us to stay strong and committed to the club. We can draw on the many different possibilities, but at the end of the day, Thomas Tuchel will make something out of nothing. There will be a way out as long as we have him as manager and all of our contracted players still under him.
