Chelsea may have missed chance to sign Memphis Depay amid honest Barcelona admission

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wasn't the only Barcelona forward Chelsea were interested in signing in the summer. Aubameyang arrived on deadline day, penning a three-year deal at Stamford Bridge in an attempt to solve their striker problem.

However, Todd Boehly also launched a late move for Aubameyang's Barcelona team-mate Memphis Depay, although a deal never materialised. The Dutchman chose to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place with their plethora of attacking options.

Depay has played just three times so far this season across all competitions. First-team chances have been limited as the former Manchester United forward competes for a spot with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres and Raphinha.

But Chelsea's chance to sign Depay may have passed them by, with the striker revealing that he is enjoying life at the La Liga giants, despite regular game time being far from guaranteed. The 28-year-old has insisted that the competition for places is something he will relish.

"I had two starting spots in the last two weeks in La Liga," he told ESPN NL. "It's not enough. I get taken off after 60 minutes but I am longing for more. In the last 25 minutes of the game there is more space and I always have the power to profit from that.

"Other clubs came and then you just look at your options. I decided to fight for my chance here. I was the top scorer of Barca with Aubameyang. I love competition and I don't walk away from it. I enjoy being at Barca."
