Chelsea: Mauricio Pochettino gives himself a taste of his own medicine after incurring referees' wrath

Mauricio Pochettino imposed a club punishment on himself for incurring the wrath of referees - as the Chelsea boss criticised new rules that targets managers' bad behaviour.

The Argentine will not be allowed in the dugout at Newcastle on Saturday, having stormed onto the pitch to confront referee Anthony Taylor in the 4-4 draw at home to Manchester City.

Pochettino punished striker Nicolas Jackson after his one-game ban for five yellow cards was largely earned for arguing with officials, and now the manager has dished out a reprimand to himself.

"[Jackson] had to run [for his punishment]," Pochettino revealed on Friday. "And I am going to pay for a dinner because I got suspended and I cannot run, so I prefer to pay."

Two of Pochettino’s three yellow cards came earlier this season against Brighton and Burnley, and he has admitted he needs to control his emotions following an apology to Taylor immediately after the match.

However, he has explained his wider issue with PGMOL, the referees' authority in English football, for imposing such strict rules on players and managers without consultation.

"We have to be more flexible — we are too square with things," he continued. "That also doesn’t help the relationship.

"Sometimes we are frustrated because we were talking in the last managers' meeting [about this]. The coaches need to be more involved in these decisions."

Mikel Arteta is currently awaiting a possible punishment for slating VAR after a decision went against Arsenal in the 1-0 defeat away at Newcastle last month, and Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi risked a sanction after saying he dislikes "80 per cent" of the referees in the Premier League.

"It’s not only one coach that thinks like this," added Pochettino. "We all have full respect for the referees. We understand perfectly that their job is really tough.

"But the problem is, sometimes you get frustrated during the game because of the VAR or things. And you cannot go and complain to the referee or the VAR. That is a problem."
