Chelsea make shock £75m Bayern Munich transfer 'offer' as Thomas Tuchel makes important decision

Chelsea have offered Bayern Munich the chance to sign Wesley Fofana in the summer transfer window, according to a new report. The French defender only signed for the Blues 12 months ago and despite enduring a season of difficulty due to numerous injuries, he is set to be a key part of Mauricio Pochettino's first-team plans.

The Argentine's first day officially working as the new Chelsea boss was on Monday, July 4 as he met both football and non-football members of staff which resulted in him hosting a barbecue. Full training is expected to start today (Tuesday) with senior stars who did not play for their national teams set to return.

After making his senior debut for France in June, one of the players not due back until the weekend at least is Fofana. However had things gone slightly differently that may not have been the case at all. According to Sport1 reporter Kerry Hau, Fofana was 'offered' to Bayern Munich, however the chance to sign him was turned down by the German champions.

Sealing a move to the Bavarians would have seen Fofana reunite with Thomas Tuchel who initially brought him to Stamford Bridge from Leicester in a deal worth up to £75million. Bayern are in need of additions in the centre of defence but they deemed Fofana to be too expensive as they close in on the signing of Napoli defender Kim Min-jae.

With the futures of Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva currently looking uncertain, Fofana has a great opportunity to become undroppable under Pochettino. Another defensive option in Cesar Azpilicueta is also expected to depart with a move to Atletico Madrid in the pipeline with an agreement reached to terminate his Blues contract.

Chalobah meanwhile, as football.london understands, is seeing a possible summer move from Chelsea to Inter Milan being negotiated. The two clubs are discussing a loan with an obligation to buy, but the Blues want a buy-back clause – which is thought to be a stumbling block but talks are ongoing.

Less competition at the back would mean the 22-year-old could become the favoured option to deploy on the right of a central defensive partnership which would likely see him slot in next to either Levi Colwill or Benoit Badiashile.

However, neither look as though they will be able to make an immediate impression on Pochettino with Colwill away at the Under-21 European Championships with England, while Badiashile is dealing with a severe hamstring injury, although football.london understands he has returned to the gym to step up his recovery.
