Chelsea make major Mauricio Pochettino breakthrough as deal agreed for new manager

Chelsea have agreed a deal to make Mauricio Pochettino the club's new manager, football.london understands.

The Argentine is set to take over as the new head coach following on from Frank Lampard at the end of the season. After a month of positive conversations and talks between the two parties, an agreement was reached.

Pochettino is yet to sign the contract but is expected to swiftly upon an announcement for the 51-year-old. It will give him a full pre-season and time in advance to get his feet under the table and start planning for the next campaign.

The former Tottenham boss has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season. He is expected to bring a handful of his close backroom staff with him including Jesus Perez. Miguel D'Agostino, Miki, has also worked closely with him in the past.

Todd Boehly and Co have been searching for a third permanent manager of their brief tenure as owners ever since the sacking of Graham Potter. What followed was a thorough and exhaustive process of narrowing down candidates with Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany all considered.

Pochettino became the front-runner several weeks ago, though, and is now set to become the new man in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The news comes just hours after Frank Lampard oversaw the club's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest. He has three games left as interim boss before Pochettino gets to work in charge with aims of clearing out the bloated squad and making steps towards a massive improvement on the field next season.
