Chelsea make major Graham Potter sacking decision ahead of key Liverpool Premier League clash

Chelsea sunk to a new low on Saturday as the side dropped into the bottom half of the Premier League table with a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa. Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery oversaw the victory for the away side at Stamford Bridge as Ollie Watkins pounced on a defensive error from the Blues.

John McGinn then doubled the lead with a long-range effort as the home crowd were left bemoaning missed chances and backline mistakes. The result has only added extra pressure to manager Graham Potter, who would've been forgiven for thinking his side had turned a corner after registering three wins on the bounce across all competitions last month.

"I understand when you lose at home that the emotion of the game that people are going to be disappointed and frustrated and angry," the head coach told the press after the game. "Where we are in the league table, no one is happy with. Whatever criticism comes, I have to accept."

Plenty of fans have voiced their displeasure over the situation, while reports claimed that other managers such as Julian Nagelsmann have been 'appreciated' by the Blues. However, at this stage, it appears as though the message is the same as it has been throughout this difficult period.

That being one of sticking behind Potter and the long-term plan in place as CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs claims it is "business as usual" at Chelsea today. This means that the former Brighton man is set to take charge of the game against Liverpool in midweek, despite results.

It remains to be seen whether the form can be turned around for good, but at the moment the board are continuing to back their No. 1 choice at the helm.
