Chelsea 'made attempt' to sign Cody Gakpo at last minute before Liverpool transfer

Chelsea reportedly made a last minute attempt at signing Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, but failed to match the bid made by Liverpool.

The Reds secured the signing of the Netherlands star on Wednesday night after moving quickly over the Christmas period to secure one of the hottest properties in football.

Liverpool also pipped fierce rivals Manchester United to the signing of Gakpo, with Erik ten Hag having already targeted the Dutchman in the summer transfer window.

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, Chelsea also made an attempt to sign the talented forward after learning of Liverpool's strong interest, but did not match the offer made by the Reds.

Graham Potter's side reportedly were willing to pay a total package of £35.4 million, but that offer was rejected by the Dutch club. Liverpool completed the signing for an initial fee of £37m and that could rise to £45m if add-ons are met.

Despite their seeming reluctance to part with more money for Gakpo, Chelsea are expected to keep themselves busy in the January window, having already confirmed a deal to sign David Datro Fofana from Molde.

The Blues have also been linked with the likes of Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix and Benfica's Enzo Fernandez, who has also been touted for a move to Anfield.
