Chelsea legends hand Todd Boehly green light to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as new manager

Cesc Fabregas and Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink have both admitted they would be happy to see Mauricio Pochettino become Chelsea's next manager. The former Tottenham boss is entering crucial talks with the Blues hierarchy as the final details for his appointment could be completed in the coming weeks.

A permanent appointment is desperately needed at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea suffering their sixth consecutive loss on Tuesday evening with defeat to Arsenal. After just 34 minutes, the Blues found themselves losing 3-0 with the Gunners running riot against their neighbours.

As was evidenced by the London derby drubbing, if he is brought in, Pochettino has numerous issues to solve, likely starting in attack. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was handed a start by interim boss Frank Lampard, but was withdrawn at half time having touched the ball just seven times, with four of those coming from kick offs.

Following the clash, the topic over who would take over permanently in west London was brought up, with ex-Chelsea striker Hasselbaink giving his thoughts on Pochettino.

"He has got the pedigree," Hasselbaink told Sky Sports. "I don’t have any reservations, if he comes in I’d be very happy because he plays really good football and he has done magnificent things at Spurs, he’s been at a big club - PSG - he’s worked with really big players, he’s won the league, so he knows how it works. But, I don’t know exactly what Chelsea wants. I’d be happy with Pochettino if he comes."

Fabregas, who spent five years at Chelsea after an eight-year spell at Arsenal, agreed with the 51-year-old, citing his work at Spurs as the reason why he should be handed the opportunity.

"I think so," Fabregas replied when asked if Pochettino is the right man for the job. "As you mentioned, he had a really good experience at Spurs working with young players, he turned them into a really good level so why not? It’s just about getting the right person, which is the difficult thing."

Hasselbaink then sent a clear message to Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali regarding how they must operate if Pochettino comes in. "If you go with Pochettino, you need to follow him," he said. "That is also from above. You really need to support him and stick with him, and believe in him.

"You have to give him the tools to do what he wants to do, and it has to be a long-term job. Yes, I know football, you still need to win matches, but you have to follow him and let him be successful."
