Chelsea in Borussia Dortmund transfer race as talks held over Bayern Munich star Niklas Sule

There were plenty of underwhelmed Chelsea fans around when the January transfer window slammed shut on Monday night with their club failing to strengthen.

The Blues were linked with a number of new arrivals with Thomas Tuchel particularly eager to bolster his attacking unit and at left-back, with Ben Chilwell set to miss the rest of the season.

But nobody arrived and supporters will watch on and hope that they already boast enough talent to close the 10-point gap on Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Just because the January transfer window has ended, it does not mean the transfer rumours stop, however.

One name linked with a move to Stamford Bridge over the course of the month was Bayern Munich centre-back Nicklas Sule.

Although a deal for the German was not reached last month, it is one that is set to be revisited at the end of the season after his contract with the Bundesliga giants expires.

football.london also understands Sule is under consideration and he will be available on a free transfer with his time at Bayern Munich coming to a close at the end of the campaign.

But the Blues look set to face competition for the 26-year-old's signature.

According to Sport1, Borussia Dortmund have held initial talks with representatives of Sule over a potential summer move.

With the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen all potentially leaving on free transfers in the summer, Chelsea will be eager to steel a march on their future recruitment.

Sule, who is valued at £31.5million by Transfermarkt, has been a regular in Julien Nagelsmann's side this season, missing just two Bundesliga matches because of Covid.

He is also a regular in Hansi Flick's national side, even playing alongside Rudiger in recent World Cup qualifiers.
