Chelsea: How Mauricio Pochettino thrived where Graham Potter failed in assured start

New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino hit all the right notes on his first day in the job.

He immediately got fans onside on Monday when he called Chelsea "the greatest team in England" and said he understands "the culture of the club is to win".

While you would expect that rhetoric during an in-house media interview, Pochettino also used language that Chelsea fans expect to hear from their manager.

The 51-year-old Argentine said he wants his players to be "animals" who "fight for the badge" and "die for the club".

His first interview at Chelsea will no doubt further upset Tottenham supporters, but it was just what Chelsea fans wanted to hear.

Graham Potter too often struck the wrong chord last season, consistently talking about the team "having to suffer" during a transitional period.

Pochettino, in contrast, vowed to quickly restore Chelsea to the top end of the table and insisted he had no doubts about taking the job, despite his Spurs past.

"Of course, there are always ups and downs in the history of football, but Chelsea is a club that it is impossible to have these ups and downs," he said.

"We need to be sure that we bring what the club needs to be at the top, because the history of the club is to be at the top.

"It is exciting for us, and what we want is to bring the happiness again to this great football club. We will work hard, play in a way the fans can enjoy football, and the history of Chelsea is to win — but it is important also in the way we are going to build those victories."

Like Thomas Tuchel, Pochettino is an excellent communicator and showed he understands what is expected from him as he bids to rebuild Chelsea after one of the worst seasons in their recent history. It was an assured start from Pochettino, who was due to oversee his first training session at Cobham this afternoon.
