Chelsea hopeful over contract renewals as Arno Michels provides Mason Mount injury update

Here are your latest football.london headlines on Sunday, February 6.

Chelsea hopeful over key defender renewals

Chelsea remain hopeful over renewing the contracts of defensive trio Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta, reports The Athletic.

The three centre-backs are all out-of-contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer, with all of them linked with a move away come the end of the season.

The report claims that Barcelona have already made an offer of a three-year contract to Azpilicueta, who has spent nearly ten-years at the club since joining from Marseille.

It also claims that Rudiger has turned down a latest contract offer, though talks are still positive and ongoing.

While it may be worrying that this situation has occurred, which could leave Thomas Tuchel short at the back come the end of the season, the report also claims that Chelsea have plans should the players leave.

Mason Mount injury update

Chelsea assistant manager Arno Michels has provided an injury update for midfielder Mason Mount after the FA Cup tie with Plymouth on Saturday.

The Blues managed to edge past their League One opponents, though they required extra-time to do so.

That extra thirty-minutes may have come at a price though, as Mount came off after a tweak from taking a shot at the edge of the box.

After the game, the Blues’ assistant said: “He felt an injury in extra time with this shot. He realised quick he felt pain and so we took him off.

"There will be further exams. Hopefully, it's not too bad but I can't promise what the situation is."

Thomas Tuchel proven right after Kepa heroics

Kepa Arrizabalaga was the hero once again for Chelsea when it came to making a key stop from a penalty for Plymouth.

The Spaniard denied a late equaliser in extra-time, diving low to his left to stop the game going to a shootout.

His ability to save from spot-kicks has been praised before by Tuchel and he has proven why his manager had the faith in him to do so.
