Chelsea ’s pursuit of Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has been handed a boost as reports claim that the centre-back would make the move to Stamford Bridge due to his “admiration” for manager Thomas Tuchel. The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with the Blues this summer as part of a huge defensive overhaul.
The changes at the back are much-needed for the German coach, who lost key duo Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger as free agents. However, new owner Todd Boehly is said to have pledged over £200million in funds for a refresh of the squad.
Talking about the summer ahead, the manager said: “We are affected by it, players are going out. We are rebuilding, not improving the squad. We are rebuilding. This is always challenging but we are up for the challenge.”

While additions are expected across the squad, replacing the two centre-backs may be the most pressing issue. The likes of Nathan Ake, Jules Kounde and Presnel Kimpembe have all been linked with a move in the window to fill that role.
However, it appears as though de Ligt may be the most likely to be the first defensive signing. The Blues are said to have been in talks over a move with Juventus as the player eyes a new challenge.
And, according to PA News Agency, the defender has an “admiration” for Tuchel, which may aid any potential move. Another boost is that the report states the Bianconeri have softened their stance that his release clause, worth roughly £102million, must be met.
This could mean that the Blues are able to save millions and land their ideal centre-back target in the summer.
