Chelsea have been given a huge boost of signing their Edouard Mendy replacement following Manchester United's own goalkeeper decision. Mendy is one of many Blues players, which also includes N'Golo Kante, Hakim Ziyech and Kalidou Koulibaly, set to join the Saudi Arabian league with his transfer to Al-Ahli.
For much of 2023 it was reported that the club were in the market for a new goalkeeper, with the futures of Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga seeming uncertain. However, Mauricio Pochettino has now made decision on both, with Mendy to depart the club and Kepa remaining as the Argentine's No.1, as revealed by the Evening Standard.
As a result of this, the Blues' pursuit of Inter star Andre Onana which left Manchester United alone in the race for his signature and they have now made their first official move by contacting Onana's representatives to express their interest, according to the Athletic.
The future of David De Gea remains up in the air after he was not named on United's retained list with it mentioned contract talks were ongoing. The Red Devils making their move for Onana may hint that decision being announced is close with the club unlikely to keep both on the books.
Alternative options to Onana for Chelsea included Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and Brentford’s David Raya. Alongside these names, Portuguese outlet Record claim there is interest from Stamford Bridge in Porto's Diogo Costa, who was also of interest to Man United.
Chelsea may deem over £60million as too much but discussions could potentially see that price dip if they decide to pursue Costa. Close to £200million in funds could be coming the way of Chelsea which could open the door to a few lucrative transfers, although some of that money will be needed to help balance the books ahead of an FFP deadline on June 30.
