Chelsea fans told by Premier League chief when Roman Abramovich's sale could be completed

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been told it will likely take a number of weeks for him to sell the club after he made the decision to sell the club.

The Russian oligarch confirmed the decision on Wednesday evening in a statement on the club's official website, published just over an hour before Chelsea met Luton in the FA Cup.

Goals from Saul Niguez, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku helped Thomas Tuchel's men come from behind twice against the spirited Hatters to win 3-2.

After the final whistle, Tuchel confirmed that he had only been told about Abramovich's final decision shortly before the rest of the world found out.

"Maybe I heard it a little bit earlier than you but still it was very close to kick-off," the German told the BBC.

"But we heard the rumours throughout the day and on TV. When we have team meetings and we eat together, the guys talk about it, everybody talks about it.

"It is big news. Let's wait and see and hope for the best and see what the day brings."

While Abramovich is clearly eager to sell amid the risk of sanctions from the UK government, the acquisition of a Premier League club is rarely a smooth process.

The Premier League originally blocked the takeover of Newcastle United by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. The move eventually went through in October.

American billionaire Todd Boehly has been reported as one of the front runners to take the Blues off Abramovich's hands, but Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says any deal will likely take weeks to complete.

"The quickest one [club takeover] we've done is 10 days, not to say that can't be beaten," he said while speaking at the Financial Times' live football event.

"Normally it's a matter of weeks but depends on complexities and number of potential owners."

He also hinted that any deal would be further complicated were Abramovich to be sanctioned by the government before an agreement.

Commenting on the hypothetical scenario, Masters said: "I don't think that will work."
