Chelsea fans to honour Thiago Silva with new Stamford Bridge display

Chelsea fans have paid for a Thiago Silva banner to be unfurled inside Stamford Bridge before one of their final two remaining home games.

A crowd-surfing banner has been designed for the Matthew Harding Stand, following similar displays for Mason Mount, Reece James and Frank Lampard.

The Shed End will also pay tribute as Chelsea host Nottingham Forest on Saturday and, after away games against both Manchester clubs, they then face Newcastle at home on the final day of the season.

After Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League to Real Madrid last month, 38-year-old Silva became the only player to publicly criticise the ownership at the club.

Silva suggested poor transfer strategy has hamstrung the club and led to dressing room disharmony.

He believes “indecision” at the top of the club has had a negative impact on the team and has warned a change in strategy is needed to avoid more pain next season.

“I think the first step has been made, an incorrect step, but it has been made,” said Silva. “We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision.

“Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.

“A positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad but on the other hand there are always players that are going to be unhappy. There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play. The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something – that’s tough.

“Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”
