Chelsea failed in £50m deadline day bid for Romeo Lavia as summer spree went down to final hours

Chelsea failed with a remarkable £50million deadline day bid for Southampton's Romeo Lavia.

The Blues completed the signings of both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria with just hours of the summer window to go, and Standard Sport can confirm a huge offer for the young Belgian was also submitted.

Southampton rejected the bid for a player they signed from Manchester City less than two months prior, on July 6, as they had no time to secure a replacement.

The new Chelsea ownership were the previous day in attendance as Lavia scored against the Blues his first Premier League goal as Southampton won 2-1 at St. Mary's.

The Blues had already lodged a £43million for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, but again the selling club were unable to recruit a replacement as the Eredivisie window had closed.

A similar bid for PSV's Ibrahim Sangare was also unsuccessful as the Boehly-Clearlake ownership shopped around Europe in the dying hours of a three-month long transfer window.

Chelsea are expected to go back in for a midfielder in January with N'Golo Kante and Jorginho in the final year of their contracts.
