Chelsea face transfer battle with Tottenham for in-demand £40m attacker as double-deal fails

Chelsea face competition if they are to reignite their interest in Everton forward Anthony Gordon, football.london understands.

The 21-year-old was heavily pursued by Thomas Tuchel after the Blues won 1-0 at Goodison Park on the opening day of the league season in August but remained in Merseyside as Chelsea backed out due to a difference in value for the attacker.

Gordon looked to prove Chelsea wrong, scoring twice in the weeks after the £40m move was first revealed, but hasn't had the desired impact since, scoring just once in nine matches since. Tuchel, who was a big advocate for the Englishman having been impressed with his energy during two matches across last season and this season, has left though, and Graham Potter may not be as interested.

Todd Boehly wasn't the first to register interest in the player though, as Tottenham had already enquired about him earlier in the summer. Daniel Levy was also put off by the price tag, especially after no compromise could be found in an attempt to secure a double deal for Richarlison too.

Spurs ended up paying £60m for the Brazilian, whereas Gordon had his own £50m value. That put Antonio Conte off and Chelsea themselves didn't agree with the high price as £60m was later demanded, whilst the Blues didn't want to go above £40m.

If Gordon is in-demand again then there could be some off-field rivalry, as football.london understands Spurs are still monitoring him. Although a deal is more likely in the summer than January, nothing can be taken off the table. Chelsea themselves are expected to be busy in the winter window, but have more pressing issues in midfield and defence.
