It did not take long for Reece James to become a Chelsea treasure. He was practically destined to become a Chelsea great from the second he returned from Wigan on loan. As it stands, he is a Champions League and Club World Cup winner for his boyhood club and has made a name for himself as one of the best right-backs in the game right now. It's no wonder that clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City are keeping an eye on the 24-year-old.
As his contract is not set to run out up until 2025, the question is, why does Chelsea need to rush on renewing his terms? He does not look set to leave any time soon and appears to be happy at the club. His father in the past stated that it would be his son's dream to one day become captain of Chelsea.
But as we now know, things can change in the blink of an eye, so Chelsea must move fast and smart with Reece James.

According to the Daily Mail, both Manchester City and Real Madrid view Reece James as a long-term transfer target. With that in mind, they are ready to swoop in at any point if they sense that the England international is unhappy with his situation. There is a particular reason why he may become unhappy with his situation. His current contract places him as one of the lowest earners at the club. He earns around £70,000 per week which for an integral player, is not so attractive.
Of course, it's not always about the money, but there's the thought of common respect that should have Todd Boehly worrying whether or not he should rush for a new James contract. At the end of the day, every player wants to feel as though they are valued in a team where they consistently give their all. A wage increase will be a sign of that respect and would scare off the lingering rivals that are eager to pounce on our star boy.
Unfortunately, there are also several other issues that the Blues must prioritise before they look at a contract that still has three years left on it. N'golo Kante, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount are just a few names that have contracts that expire before James'. They will of course be prioritised as their questions on their imminent future will need answering.
Following the events that have transpired with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in the season the just passed, it's okay to have trust issues as a fan. It's a frightening thought thinking that Reece James could end up as a Real Madrid player, or as Man City's answer to Kyle Walker. But there is still no rush in a new contract either. If the club decide that now is the best time to reward him, then great! Everyone's mind will be settled and James will get what he deserves. But if not, then there is a long season ahead where the Blues can work towards making things right.
Don't panic.
