Chelsea face losing Timo Werner to Liverpool in search of ideal Romelu Lukaku replacement

Romelu Lukaku is set to complete his loan transfer to Inter Milan next week after completing his medical. Chelsea desperately need a rebuild, but replacing the Belgian international may not be at the top of their priorities. Thomas Tuchel will be looking to focus on the gaps within the defence as the Blues grow closer to their targets, Matthijs de Ligt and Jules Kounde. There's also the possibility of Tuchel looking towards finding wing-back cover. All in all, a world-class striker should have to be easily accessible if the Blues are to divert their attention.

Looking within the squad, Chelsea still have two players who can occupy that striking role. One is Kai Havertz, and the other, more controversially, is Timo Werner. As it stands, Werner remains a Chelsea player. Whether or not this can change this transfer window is yet to be known.

Despite the mixed reviews for the German striker, there could be a chance of revival for his Chelsea career. Another season in the Premier League could see him unlock another level of potential that the Blues have been working towards since his arrival in 2020. Let's not forget that this player was once a 30 goals a season striker.

The German forward is a player that is ultimately loved by a vast majority of the fan base. He has struggled on his Chelsea journey, but his determination on the pitch has won them over. The last season saw his game time extremely limited under Tuchel. He'd only featured in 37 matches in comparison to 52 the season before. Throughout the season, his situation has been publicised, and it became clear that he would either want more game time or find a new club, according to the Daily Express.

The latest in transfer news suggests that Liverpool could make a surprise bid for the German, having lost out to Chelsea for his signature in 2020. With the fast-paced, high-press football that Jurgen Klopp employs with his squad, it could be a match made in heaven. Chelsea cannot afford to let that happen. It might be a better risk to continue developing the 26-year-old throughout the season instead of losing him to a rival.

In an ideal world, Werner is able to replicate his form under RB Leipzig for Chelsea. It's a matter of confidence-boosting for the German as his quality is still very much so alive. He has shown this during the international break with Germany. Since September 2021, Werner has scored eight goals in 11 games for his country. That's a record that Tuchel can use to believe that there is still a player in there keen to score goals.

Chelsea are linked with Richarlison and Robert Lewandowski in the hunt for a new number 9. As exciting as it sounds, signing either option is just another way of allowing Werner an excuse to leave. Whilst Tottenham lead the race on the Brazilian, Tuchel urges Chelsea to go in the direction of Bayern Munich's superstar. Lewandowski is open to a move away from Munich but prefers Barcelona, who are actively struggling with their financial situation. If the Blues are to get Lewandowski, then it would be worth the risk letting Werner go. If they do not have the luxury of signing the Polish international but still let Werner go, they could face seasons wondering 'what if'.
