Chelsea FA Cup battle awaits Motherwell academy graduate as he aims to prove 'Lanarkshire Kante' status against English giants

For so long has Motherwell academy graduate Allan Campbell been compared to Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante - and he can't wait to potentially battle with the man himself.

Campbell has made himself a mainstay in the Luton Town team since leaving Motherwell for the English Championship last summer, and his biggest test yet is upon him.

The Hatters take on Champions League holders Chelsea this evening in the FA Cup. An energetic midfielder, Campbell's style has been compared to Chelsea midfielder Kante's, earning him a nickname, 'Lanarkshire Kante.'

He doesn't know whether any swapping of shirts will occur between the two, but Campbell says such an occasion vindicates his decision to move south.

He said: "The Lanarkshire Kante stuff is gradually coming here a bit now! I've been called that few times over the past few weeks so it's slowly coming out!

"It will be amazing to come up against him. He's one of the best midfielders in the world. I've never really did shirt-swapping after a game but we will have to see what's it is like after the game!

"I am looking forward to it and it'll be brilliant to challenge myself against the current champions of Europe.

"It'll be exciting. I want to play against these players and it's one of the main reasons I came here. I'm only going to get better playing against better players, taking bits from their game to put into your own."

Luton are pushing for the promotion play-off spots in England's second-tier, with Campbell having netted four times since the turn of the year.

His first was a brilliant effort in a dramatic 3-2 win over Bournemouth and he has kicked on from there. It's something he knew he had to work on after leaving Motherwell.

Campbell explained: "It's something I need to keep adding to my game. I need to get those shots away when I can and thankfully a few of them I've hit have gone. It's stuff I've thought I could look at and improve on.

"It's something I think can help make me better. When you look back on your own performances, you look at things you can add to it. This is something I feel I can add, instead of maybe playing it wide or looking for a pass.

"If you don't shoot, you don't score. That first goal I scored for Luton was a good day all around. We scored that goal late on so it made it a really good day."

Looking up the table, Campbell says part of his adjustment has been getting used to game's every day in the English Championship. He's now motoring on and the ex-Steelman says continued results could spark Premier League dreams.

He said: "Since the turn of the year we have picked up some great results. It shows the level of player we have in the squad. Hopefully we can keep performing at that level, keep grinding results out, and you never know what could happen at the end of the season.

"It's been getting used to that relentless way down here of games every few days. You need to recover well but as a footballer you would rather play games. It's been good."

A horror tackle from Blackburn defender Darragh Lenihan had Campbell suffer ankle ligament damage earlier in the season.

He didn't play for almost two months, but the 24-year-old is now fully settled in the Championship, which has been a step up from Scottish Premiership action.

The midfielder added: "It's probably the best I've played since I came down here. I started well then picked up an injury. It set me back a bit but since I've got back in the team, I have grew more and more in confidence.

"I've been performing well. At the time I was trying not to be out for too long, building myself back up and getting into the starting XI again. I have been trying to make an impact on the team and I am playing a lot of games.

"Hopefully I can keep kicking on. It's a higher level in the Championship but I think I have adjusted well. Once you get settled in off the park, and get comfortable, you begin to feel at home and can kick on. That's what I have done."
