Chelsea defender Reece James set to withdraw from England squad with Tyrick Mitchell to be called up

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins are to be added to the England squad, with Reece James set to withdraw.

Gareth Southgate was this morning preparing to announce several changes to the 25-man group for this month’s friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast following the weekend’s action.

Watkins was informed he had been included following Aston Villa’s defeat to Arsenal on Saturday and will be hoping to win a sixth cap, while left-back Mitchell is set for a maiden call-up, with the players set to report to St. George’s Park tomorrow.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has already withdrawn and Chelsea’s James is set to follow, having been left out of the Blues’ FA Cup win over Middlesbrough this weekend.

Speaking after naming his initial group on Thursday, Southgate said of the young defender: “Tyrick, we’ve been really impressed with. He was very close.

“I think he’s been very good with his defending, he gets out quickly to people and in the biggest games against top opponents he’s coped really well.”

England play the Swiss on March 26 and Ivory Coast three days later, with both games at Wembley.
