Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori set for new contract talks after David Luiz exit scuppers loan switch

Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is going to hold talks with the club over a new contract after being promoted to the senior squad.

The centre-back was due to join Everton on loan this term, but is staying after David Luiz’s shock decision to force an £8million move to rivals Arsenal on deadline day.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea were already planning to give Tomori an extension as he has just two years left remaining on his current deal.

But the onus on keeping the England Under-21 international, who starred for Derby in the Championship last season, for the long-term has increased and a new five-year agreement is expected.

He is set to be on the bench for the first league game of the season at Manchester United on Sunday and should make a number of appearances during the campaign, even when Antonio Rudiger returns from a knee injury.

Coach Frank Lampard, who was his manager at Derby in 2018-19, is a huge admirer of the 21-year-old and feels he can become a regular at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have already given lengthy new contracts to other academy graduates that are part of the first team in Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount.

Callum Hudson-Odoi’s should be announced soon too, as well as one for Reece James.
