Chelsea contact Graham Potter after Thomas Tuchel sacking with Mauricio Pochettino also in frame

Chelsea have already made contact with Brighton manager Graham Potter about replacing Thomas Tuchel as their manager.

Potter is admired by new Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake, who have a positive relationship with Brighton after concluding three transfer deals with them over the summer.

Chelsea’s new owners want a coach who can bring a long-term approach to developing their squad and work collaboratively with them on recruitment. They now want to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Although Potter hasn’t won any major trophies in English football, he has consistently overachieved at Brighton and delivered the club’s highest-ever league finish.

Within the coaching community, he is regarded as the rising star and his appointment could be considered a progressive one.

Chelsea want a coach who can be relied upon to squad build and handle their world-record summer transfer spend with a steady consistency.

If Potter is appointed, it would show that the new owners believe he could help foster their vision for a new corporate culture at Cobham and Stamford Bridge which will see progressive figures hired.

Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are clear about their vision for Chelsea’s future and have appointed ex-Manchester City executive Tom Glick to oversee the non-football side of the business, with more staff from the Premier League champions to be hired underneath him.

Mauricio Pochettino is also being considered for the manager’s job, but the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain coach is not considered a frontrunner for now.

Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is the favoured choice to come in as new Chelsea sporting director but Monaco chief Paul Mitchell has also been considered.

It is believed that Pochettino’s future could be tied to whether Mitchell is preferred as the pair have worked together well at Tottenham.

Tuchel was sacked in a face-to-face meeting today at Cobham on Wednesday morning after a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

In their statement announcing the sacking of Tuchel, Chelsea said: “As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”
