Chelsea confirm Marcos Alonso transfer decision with Barcelona set to sign Spanish defender

Chelsea have confirmed that Marcos Alonso's contract has been terminated by mutual consent – and the Spaniard is set to complete a move to Barcelona later today.

Alonso arrived at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina in a deal worth £24million in the summer of 2016. He began the campaign among the substitutes but came into the starting XI when Antonio Conte switched to a 3-4-3 and played an important role in the Blues winning the Premier League title.

He remained a regular figure in the side under Maurizio Sarri and during Frank Lampard's first season at the helm. However, Alonso fell out with the Chelsea legend after being brought off at half time of a 3-3 draw against West Bromwich Albion and it wasn't until Thomas Tuchel took charge that he was brought back into the fold.

Alonso played second fiddle to Ben Chilwell at left wing-back during the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign but made 46 appearances across all competitions last term with the England international ruled out for much of the campaign with a knee ligament injury.

It became clear early into this summer that Alonso was ready to depart; Barcelona approached him early over a move to the Camp Nou and a three-year deal was proposed. And once Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton and Hove Albion, it was simply a case of patience on the part of the 31-year-old.

His wish has now been granted as he leaves Chelsea on a free transfer. Barcelona are expected to confirm his permanent signing later today in their final piece of business of the window.
