Chelsea confirm Gabriel Slonina return after injury

Goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina has returned to Chelsea after a loan spell at Barnsley.

The American international, who joined the Blues from Chicago Fire in the summer of 2022, made 14 appearances for the League One side this season but an injury has curtailed his spell at Oakwell.

It was the American’s third loan spell away from Chelsea, having previously played for Fire and Belgian side Eupen.

Slonina has not featured since a 2-2 draw with Charlton back in October, partly due to the hand issue.

While it remains to be seen whether or not the 22-year-old is sent back out on loan should he recover by the end of the January transfer window, Chelsea already have a wealth of options in the goalkeeping department.

Robert Sanchez has generally been preferred in the Premier League, with Filip Jorgensen taking cup duties.

Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom are also options in Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad.
