Chelsea complete another transfer as Noni Madueke makes move after Man Utd snub

Chelsea have announced their latest January signing, singing a seven-and-a-half-year deal after arriving from PSV.

Madueke, 20, played for Crystal Palace and Tottenham as youngster before making the decision to leave English football as an 18-year-old. He has since spent four years with the Dutch giants, learning most recent under Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Red Devils actually tried to sign Madueke as a teenager, but the winger instead decided to continue his development away from the glaring lights of the Premier League.

" Chelsea, Manchester United, a lot of European clubs [made offers]," Madueke said. "I came here one time and as soon as I came I wanted to sign straight away.

"I knew going from Tottenham to United is pretty much the same thing. The reason I wanted to go was to progress quicker into the first team. PSV is a top European club. It made so much sense at the time and it makes sense now."

That strategy has now paid off handsomely with the England youth international back in the Premier League and set to be a prominent figure under Blues boss Graham Potter. Madueke becomes the sixth signing to arrive at Stamford Bridge this month, with owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital going all in, despite their disappointing campaign.

"I’m really pleased to sign with one of the best clubs in the world in Chelsea," Madueke said. "To return to England and play in the Premier League is a dream for me and my family and I can’t wait to get started. I am excited for what the future holds, the owner's vision for the future and to be at a club like this and winning at the highest level."

Madueke joins David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Joao Felix, Andriy Santos and Mykaylo Mudryk in moving to west London in January. It also means their total spend is closing in on £200m having smashed that figure in a record-breaking summer spending spree.

Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said: "We're delighted to bring Noni to Chelsea. He’s an exciting talent who has proven his quality over the past few years with PSV, playing in a strong European league, and we are thrilled he has chosen to join Chelsea for this next stage of his career. We are sure he will form an important part of our team."

Chelsea go into this weekend's clash with Liverpool in 10th place and in desperate need of all three points. And with the arrival of Madueke, Potter has hinted their transfer business may now be at an end.

“I don’t think they’ll be too many to be honest," he explained, before the announcement. "I’ve not got complaints about the squad. I’ve said before that the January window is very complex. You might want A, B, and C but maybe they are not available in terms of positional need.

"But at the same time, you’re always looking to strengthen the team. We’ve done that and it’s exciting the players we have. When players are back [from injury] there is a good and exciting squad of players.”
