Chelsea close to free transfer for young Norwich star as key part of Todd Boehly project

Chelsea are on the verge of making a major addition to their Under-21 set up with the Blues close to signing attacker Alex Matos from Norwich.

The 18-year-old has made 13 Premier League 2 appearances in the second half of the season for Norwich after featuring in eight Under-18 Premier League outings, mostly towards the latter stages of 2022. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are very close to signing Matos on a free transfer.

The Italian journalist claims Matos is seen as being a key part of a project set by Jim Fraser, who was promoted to head of youth development and recruitment last month.

Matos joins a long list of young talent joining the club under the Clearlake consortium of Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. The Blues have already acquired Andrey Santos, Gabriel Slonina, Dujuan Richards and many others, with the view to steadily integrate them into the first-team picture.

Ecuadorian wonderkid Kendry Paez is another name seemingly set to sign for the west Londoners. The Blues have officially made contact with his current club Independiente del Valle over his signature with a 'decision to be made soon' on the teenager's future.

Journalist Eduardo Erazo has claimed that a bid worth £14.8m has already been rejected, hinting at the sort of price Boehly will have to spend.

Matos joined the Canaries from Luton Town in 2016 at Under-12 level and has continued with the Canaries since. The exciting midfielder began his scholarship journey with the club after putting pen to paper in July 2021, but he could now leave the club, with Chelsea firmly knocking on the door.
