Chelsea can finally complete Jose Mourinho's Paul Pogba transfer mission after star's statement

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has revealed that his main ambition going forward is to win trophies, potentially offering Chelsea the chance to land their former transfer target.

Pogba is set to become a free agent at the end of the campaign and, while a renewal at Old Trafford is not out of the question, the World Cup winner is expected to leave in the summer. Pogba has often cut a frustrated figure since arriving back at the club from Juventus in the summer of 2016 and a fresh start elsewhere looks to be on the cards.

The 29-year-old has never been shy of discussing his future in public, either. Most recently, while on international duty with France, Pogba gave an interview in which he admitted to not being satisfied since leaving Juve and that a move away is under serious consideration.

“We have to be honest, I am not satisfied over the last five years, but not at all," he said in an interview with Le Figaro. "This year, it’s dead, we will win nothing again. Whether it is with Manchester or in another club, I want to win trophies."

Sky Sports News also reported that two Premier League clubs remain interested in signing Pogba on a free transfer if he is to leave United. If Chelsea are one of those interested parties, it would not be a huge surprise given the strong interest they held in signing the player from Juventus from 2014 until he moved to the Red Devils.

In the summer of 2014, Jose Mourinho reportedly made it clear that he wanted a marquee signing to join Nemanja Matic in the Blues' midfield, with Pogba the name at the top of the candidates, according to a report from GOAL at the time. However, given the difficult relationship the duo had later at United, it is maybe a blessing that nothing came to fruition.

While there is no doubting he has changed as a player in the years since, Chelsea now have opportunity to finally complete that Mourinho transfer mission and sign Pogba on a free transfer.

As things stand, the Blues are unable to sign any new players or even negotiate contracts due to sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich. But those restrictions will lift once a new owner takes over at Stamford Bridge.
